Life Questions We All Ask – Part 2
Faith + Care Life Blog Series
By Pastor Reynante M. Trinidad
Introduction
If Part 1 asked about the purpose of all our striving, Part 2 brings us to another question many people quietly carry:
Why do we work so hard?
Every day, people wake up early, go to work, and give their strength to what they do.
We study, build careers, start businesses, and carry responsibilities.
Some work to provide for their families.
Some pursue success and recognition.
Others simply work because life requires it.
Many are also chasing something more—
security, stability, or a better future.
But if we pause for a moment and reflect, a deeper question begins to rise:
What is the real reason behind all our work?
Is work only about survival and income?
Or does it carry a deeper meaning—one that goes beyond what we can see?

Work Was Part of God’s Design
Many people today see work as a burden.
But according to Scripture, work was part of God’s plan from the very beginning.
📖 Genesis 2:15 (NIV)
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”
Before sin entered the world, work already existed.
Work was not a punishment.
It was a calling.
God gave humanity responsibility, creativity, and purpose.
Work was meant to be meaningful, fulfilling, and connected to His creation.

When Work Became Difficult
But the world did not remain the same.
When sin entered, everything changed—including the nature of work.
📖 Genesis 3:17–19 (NIV)
17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’
“Cursed is the ground because of you;
through painful toil you will eat food from it
all the days of your life.
18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”
Work became harder.
What was once joyful became heavy.
Now, many experience work as:
- stress
- fatigue
- frustration
- burnout
Work is still good.
But the world we work in is broken.
That is why even when we try our best…
we still feel tired.

Why Do We Work So Hard Today?
People work for many reasons.
Some work because they have to.
They need to provide for their families.
Some work for success.
They want to grow, achieve, and be recognized.
Some work for dreams.
They want a better life for themselves and others.
But even with all these reasons, many people still feel something is missing.
Have you ever felt this?
- Work feels endless
- Success feels empty
- Rest feels difficult
These are not just surface problems.
They are signs of something deeper.
Work in Today’s World: Knowledge, Technology, and Identity
We are living in a time where knowledge is increasing rapidly.
Technology continues to advance.
Artificial Intelligence is changing how people work, think, and even make decisions.
Tasks that once took hours can now be done in minutes.
Information is always available.
Productivity is expected at a higher level than ever before.
At first, this seems like progress—and in many ways, it is.
But along with it comes a quiet pressure.
People are now often measured by:
- their position
- their productivity
- their achievements
- their status in life
In today’s culture, worth is often connected to what we do and what we have.
Because of this, many people feel the need to constantly prove themselves.
If they succeed, they feel valued.
If they fall behind, they feel left out.
If they rest, they feel guilty.

Even with all the advancements in knowledge and technology, many still feel:
- anxious
- pressured
- uncertain about their future
This reveals something important.
Technology can improve how we work…
but it cannot answer who we are.
No amount of knowledge, success, or advancement can define our true identity.
According to Scripture, our worth is not found in our performance.
It is found in our relationship with God.
When we understand this, we are freed from the pressure to prove ourselves.
We no longer work to gain our identity.
We work from the identity that God has already given us.
The Danger of Making Work Our Identity
In today’s world, people are often defined by what they do.
When we meet someone, we ask:
“What do you do?”
But when work becomes our identity, it becomes dangerous.
- If success defines us, failure breaks us
- If productivity defines us, rest feels wrong
- If achievement defines us, we keep proving ourselves
But our identity was never meant to come from work.
Our true identity comes from our relationship with God.
Work as Worship
The Bible gives us a different way to see work.
📖 Colossians 3:23–24 (NIV)
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…”
This changes everything.
Work is no longer just a job.
It becomes an offering.
- A teacher guiding students
- A parent caring for children
- A cleaner maintaining spaces
- A nurse serving patients
- A worker doing their daily task
All of these can honor God.
Work becomes more than income.
It becomes faithfulness in action.

A Balanced View of Work
The Bible teaches both diligence and rest.
📖 Ecclesiastes 3:13 (NIV)
“That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God”.
Work is a gift—but it should not control our lives.
A healthy view of work includes:
- diligence
- gratitude
- stewardship
- rest
- trust in God
When work is in the right place,
it becomes a blessing—not a burden.
The Deeper Purpose of Work
Work is not just about earning.
It is about living with purpose.
Through our work, we:
- provide for our families
- serve others
- develop our gifts
- contribute to society
- honor God
When work is connected to God’s purpose,
it becomes meaningful.

Reflection
Many people spend most of their lives working.
But the real question is not just how hard we work…
It is why we work.
Are we working just to gain more?
Or are we working in a way that reflects our faith?
When we surrender our work to God,
it becomes more than effort.
It becomes a life with purpose.

Reflection Questions
- What motivates your work today—necessity, success, or something deeper?
- How can your daily work become an act of service to God?
- How can you balance hard work with rest and trust in Him?
